I pulled the lower unit off to replace the lower shift seal and the water pump impeller. Thinking I would check the O-ring in the upper gear box..wrong..I runined one pulling it out. There are two seals back to back. How do I replace them? I have the new seals and it looks like I have to take apart the upper gear box to do it? Easy or hard? If I put all the old gears, bearing, and shims back in the same way, will it work?? I am fairly mechanical but no tools to check backlash, torque.....

If you pull off the lower unit and look up into the upper gear box, there are two oil seals that the drive shaft goes through. The seals are an inch or two below the splines. In an exploded parts view of the upper gear box, they are labeled 5.

i have the good fortune to live in a place that has a night school with a merc sterndrive class which i took this winter and resealed 2 saltwater drives

I repiar land gearboxes for a liveing and its really different :)

This is and online service manual to look through
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14notice.pdf

I ran into several bolts that required a OX/ACC torch to remove :( with no real reason the 4 screws on the top cap 2 came out like it was a day old 2 took hours not to break

The retainer nut and carrier in the lower gear case came out easy on 1 and the other nut had to be cracked and the case heated to remove it

The problem your going to have is its pretty much time to replace all the seals and the input shaft requires a rolling torque to be set with a 160 dollar wrench :( and a few more special tools to drive in the seals

If you measure all the shims and DONT mix them up or change any parts everthing should stay the same when you put it back toghter

tommays
