Hey guys, just bought a nice bayliner with a cracked block. I'm just finishing up my engine swap and the guy I bought the boat from removed the intake before I bought it. So have a couple of mystery wires still hanging around since I didn't get to remove some of the wiring before I pulled the engine. Plus I do not have power to the positive side of the coil. I fired up the engine just to see if it was going to run and so far the 20 seconds it ran for it seemed to run great. So just have to clean up a few more little things. Tons of great information on this site btw

if anyone could happen to tell me where these wires run to in the first pic?

in the second pic both those brown wires run to the thermostat housing. Does the one with the stripe supposed to be on the right side or does that even matter?

then lastly ( I see there's a sticky for stern drive install ) I don't have the proper tool so does anyone know if I can use the sterndrives driveshaft with a dial indicator? Kinda wanted to test it on the water on Monday if everything goes to plan

i appreciate any input,, hopefully I posted in the right section, thanks

For the second question, tan goes to the water temperature sender (shorter unit) if i remember correctly on the starboard side, while the tan with blue goes to water temperature audio sender (longer unit), as far as i remember on the port side.
The first two wires might go to the hour meter, but cant say for sure without knowing where they come from. Hour meter wires come from the circuit breaker.
You can get wiring diagrams for the right engine at the http://boatinfo.no
attached is a wiring diagram with the pictures of the water temperature sending units ( to be sure where are they located)

No to using the yoke to align... The only tool that is suitable is the proper alignment bar.

Thanks for the links guys, i work till Saturday so Sunday I'll get back on this project. I think there is a small marine shop near by so maybe they would have the proper alignment shaft. I could get one made easy enough but the shop is currently out of round stock.

i will look over the wiring diagrams. Those two wires in my first pic do not go to the hour meter. But who knows what the previous owners have done as well. I'm sure after I look over those diagrams good enough that I'll figure it out. Thanks again

So I just spent an hour going over the wiring harness. It appears to be all in the spots and hooked up correctly. Looks like those two mystery wires must be for the electric choke. Which this model does not have that. I will try and look again tomorrow after work just to verify.

When I started the engine the first time I had to supply battery power to the positive side of the coil. Right now without that power it will start for a second then immediately die. Was hoping to find some wires mixed up but that's not looking to promising. Any ideas?

Well found my wiring problem. Bad connection at the back of the lanyard. Have proper power now everywhere. Found a nearby shop that will let me use the there proper alignment bar so I'm good to go tomorrow, Just need to mount the breaker properly and triple check that everything is tied up right. Grab a new fire extinguisher and then load the rest of the stuff in and I should be able to try it out on Monday. Cheers guys

Well I took it out on Friday for a decent test, it seemed to run very good actually. Had the mother in law in there and she doesn't like to go fast so I didn't open it up to much. Maybe this week I will take it to kookcanusa lake and give it a good try.

I used a block out of a 95 blazer, I picked that year because it was very close to what in the boat, a 96 and newer and I would of needed a different intake manifold. Basically used the long block and swapped everything else over, heard different rumours about exhaust seats being different in "marine" heads but I'm not to concerned. I gues time will tell to how well it runs.

Oh and after I got it all together and was about to take everyone to the lake and go camping for 2 weeks I find out that the steering cable was seized. So 200 bucks later and a week delay I finally got it all ready lol
