1993 Evin 115hp starter issues

The saga continues with the 115 (93 Evinrude) that I picked up. When trying to crank the motor, the old starter would not turn the motor over without stalling at the top of each compression stroke. I had the starter check by local shop and was told the starter was shot. They wanted more to rebuild than cost of a new starter.

Picked up a new starter and motor turns over better but not fast enough to start motor. When plugs are pulled the flywheel can be turned easily by hand. The ground cable (jumper cables) gets very hot with a few seconds of cranking. Also the fuse on the motor has been blown twice. Used two different batteries and both gave same results and are know to be in good shape.

Any suggestions on how to proceed from here?

Thanks
Allen

sounds like you may have a connection problem..check and clean all connections including on the solenoid. also you need at least 4 gauge copper wires. if they are long ( over 10') go with 2 gauge. better to keep batts near engine though. You may even consider bypassing the solenoid. you also need to find out why your fuse is blowing.

Gorunded directly to starter bolt and put positive on starter pos input. Still same results.

Bad connection, bad cable if starter checks out O.K.

don't use jumper cables, go buy a set of real battery cables, and due the above.

Dumped the jumper cables and went to battery cables. Finally got motor to start. Did not run it long due to weak water pump. Compression is 120-110-110-100. Would this be considered a usable motor with thos compression readings? Plans are rebuild carbs and new impeller. Any advise?

do a decarb..look in the secret files...this may help with the compression also change water pump impeller

they are OK, but i would do a decarb. impeller, if it has been sitting a while i would do carbs. and it is easier to do impeller with lower carbs off, so do the carbs while there.
