I've got a 40hp Evinrude which seems to have a funky tachmeter (the boat is a Tracker 17). At idle in the driveway on muffs, the tach reads 3000RPM. This seems way high, as it should e about 1500. Anyhow, I was wondering if it is possible to calibrate a tach for this model, and how you would go about it?

Look for a dial on the back of the Tach. Make sure it is set to the "6" setting...

My 89 40 johnson has a 10 pole alternator,so the setting I use is 5.yours may very well have a 10 pole alternator and would use 5 also.If yours is a 12 pole alternator then you would use the 6 setting.

I appreciate the help guys, changed the setting to 6 pole, and the problem was solved, tach readings became realistic, and it quit reading 1k with the motor turned completly off. That was an easy fix, Thanks.

I don't know the 93 specs but isn't the idle rpm supposed to be closer to 800 rpm?

He was saying in the driveway on muffs, but still, as you said, that is a bit high. I would think 1000 to 1100 on muffs, or 650 to 700 under load in gear.

1500 was a guestimate without consulting the manual, all I knew was 3000 was completly ridiciolous. With the tach at 6 pole, with the boat on the water (just had to try it out) it idles a at 1000, and drops to a 900 when you slip it into gear. WOT is 5200, which is where it should be with the prop I've got on it. Believe it or not, I'd never had the boat to WOT, as I had no realistic idea where the RPM's were, and just kept them under 6k on the faulty tach setting. At WOT, this thing is fast, 30mph on the Susquehanna river at the end of December is nuts.
