I purchased this boat last fall (1988 Alumacraft Phantom V170) with this motor on it. I have never had a motor this big before. I own a Johnson 15 hp that is bulletproof. I have a few questions about it.
-Can someone tell me the proper starting procedure? After winterizing it last fall, (and it sitting over the winter) it started hard this spring. I got it running and if I started it every day for a week it would start right up. Leave it for a few days and it would start hard again. I made sure the ball was hard, idle all the way up, and pushed in the key. The motor is stored down also. Am I doing something wrong? Old gas, although I put stabil marine in it last fall.
-Also does this particular motor have the VRO? Do I need to do anything to maintain this other than making sure there is oil in the reservoir?
-Do I need to install a fuel/water separator?
Any other tips?
