Log time lurker 1st time question: I've got what the title says and I have an oil leak at the top of the oil tank. Not where the cap goes on but where the "Oil Pickup Assembly" enters into the tank. I bought the boat and motor many years ago and when I had a leak sometime later, I pulled the old gasket/seal (I don't know if it was original to the tank) and made another one. That one worked until it didn't. I thought I 'd go OEM but here's where the problem came in.
If you go to the parts diagram (link below) you'll se what looks like a flat, rectangular, cork/rubber(?) gasket. But if you click on the part number (25) you'll go right to a rubber "O" ring. I called a dealer, explained the confusion, they took the part number, pulled the part, and informed me it's an "O" ring. They agreed the parts diagram is wrong. So, I ordered the "O" ring.
I pulled the oil pickup assembly, slipped on the "O" ring, and tried to center the "O" ring on, well something - anything. There's nothing on the cap/top that it conforms to so I centered it as best I could around the opening and evenly tightened the four torque head screws. I've not taken the boat out on the water yet so I don't know if this O ring will work.
Has anyone ever replaced the seal between the oil pickup assembly and the tank? If so, what did you find - an o ring or a flat rectangular gasket?
Thanks!
