Hello All,

I am new to the Forum and DIY motor repair. I have an 1993 Fast Strike 150 HP Outboard on my Champion 186 DC. I am hoping to get some insight and help with two issues I am having with the motor.

First issue is the engine goes into safe mode-like mode while on the lake. This is the typical scenario. Before the 1st start of the day (cold start), I prime the gas bulb, choke the engine, and turn the ignition switch. The engine starts with no problem and I can run down the lake. I fish and the engine is off. Next time I go to start the engine, it goes into what many have describe as "safe mode" or the inability to go beyond 2500 RPMs and the engine shakes. I don't have an alarm go off (it does chirp when turning the ignition). The engine could be sitting off for hours on a cold day, so I don't believe it is a temperature sensor problem. I have also never had a problem or have it cut off when I go on long runs with max throttle. I also never have the problem with the first cold start, on the subsequent starts. I have noticed though, that the gas bulb goes limp after the first run of the day. I also can do a couple of things that at times can get my back running. First, I I take the key out of the ignition, pump the throttle while in neutral, and push in the choke for an little longer, and then the engine starts and works fine (this is successful about 50% of the time). This lead me to believe I am having problems with the oil/gas/air mixture in the engine. Does that sounds right?

Second issue is that my RPM gauge randomly stops working (goes to zero) without any changes in the status of the engine. Is this an optical sensor issue?

Thanks for any help,

Albert

No, I haven't yet. I will try to check this weekend. What is the purpose of the "shift interupt switch"?

It shuts off spark to 3 cylinders to make shifting out of gear easier.-----But if the switch is sticky then you might end up with problems.
