Hello everyone.
I am new here at iboats, and appreciate any help anyone can give.
First, my engine seems to run great. I had her on the water for 7 hours yesterday, and she ran smooth and almost glitch free. Here are the questions issues I have.
Occasionally, even after just being shut down the boat sputters and dies when attempting to restart. Could this be a lean fuel issue? Secondly the starter would not work. It was spinning, put did not kick up. Then after a few minutes it would. suggestions!!
Lastly, With the engine running, what voltage shold my battery read (testing recharge circuit). It read 13.5.
Thank You for your help.
Oh I almost forgot. should my fishfinder be hooked to the starting battery, or the deep cycle trolling battery?

Lean issue? Maybe. Idle jet should be about a turn out to 1-1/4.

Starter, make sure your battery connections are good and tight. Use a pliers on the wingnuts. You might try grease on the helix on the shaft.

Voltage should be more than 13, less than 15.

Fish locator should be connected to whatever has the least interference. If you use it while using the trolling motor, connect to the main battery. Most people use the main battery.

Re: 1993 Force 40 hp

Thank You Willy,
I checked all my connections, they are tight except possibly the power cable to the starter may have been loose. I removed my starter and cleaned it out, and it seemed like the power cable was too easily removed from the bottom.
Now I have another question. I have the starter back together sort of. The starter seems tighter and harder to manually turn, then I remember. The two long bolts that hold the assembly together if barely loosened offer more give. How easily should I be able to turn the starter? Also should I lube the bottom of the armature where it sits in between the brushes, and if so with what? Where the brushes make contact the metal is black, should I clean that off, and with what?
Thanks for your help

When you took the starter apart did you remove the casing so that the brushes and springs were exposed? If so the brushes and springs are not in the correct way and you should not attempt to hook it up to the battery. If you took the starter completely apart you will want to take it apart again. The springs and the brushes will go into a small compartment and you will need something like 4 lb mono filiment line to tie them in place. Place the cover on till most of the brushes are covered then cut and remove the mono. Put the cover on the rest of the way then slowly turn the starter and it should move very easily.
