Had the boat out today for a full day of fishing and apparently left one start too late. Dead on the Water. All day I had been having trouble idling with the engine cutting off but when it got past a certain point it ran great. After the last cast we decided to head in, then I couldnt get the engine to turn over. It would crank but it just wouldn't finish the job. I had 12volts on the battery and thought after a few cranks may have flooded it so waited another 15 minute to give it a try and nothing. Eventually I burned the battery out and had to be towed in by a jetski. After we got in I noticed gas coming from this little hole in the lower unit. I have seen this hole before but never really knew what it is or its purpose. I couldnt find it in the manual. But anyways this was the first time I seen gas coming from it(as seen in the picture I attached). I had the cranking battery tested for kicks after I came in and Autozone said that the battery was no good-even though there was no charge on it(bought new last summer-duralast). Not sure if this would make a difference or not. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: 1993 Johnson 150 outboard

I have a 93 johnson ob also. And mine did the same thing took the battery in nd they said it was a bad. Artery bought a new one started it up and couldn't get it to stay on long . So I found out that my nipple in the inside of the motor cracked some how replaced it and now all I hear is a. Licking sound at the starter solenoid so I thi k I might have bad battery cables now so replacing them tom. Have u ever had problems with ur ob like this. Good luck hopefully it was just a battery issue

No problems like that as far as I could tell. Hopefully it is just your cables.

Charged the battery up last night and it turned right over first crank today. Could this just be a battery issue?

could be dead cell in battery. if you have anything else connected to the starting battery, put it on another battery.
motor only thing that belongs on starting battery. a battery can show 12 volts, but it is the amperage that drives the starter.

That should be a 35 amp stator, it should charge the battery no problem.
I would install a voltmeter in your boat if you don't have one, it beats getting stuck. Test the charging system with a meter on the battery to monitor v when running versus stopped. Put the meter on the battery cables too and check for resistance.
