1993 Johnson 250 V8 Impeller Shaft

Does anyone know if the impeller shaft is supposed to have some play in it? I can move it about an 1/8 inch back and forth, where it goes into the lower unit housing, it seems loose to me but I did not want to mess with it in case it is supposed to be that way.
