Hello . 1993 johnson 50 runs well but seems to be over charging , at least according to a new faria volt meter . We have a brand new marine deep cycle battery , maintained on a battery tender . We replaced the regulator thinking that was the issue . We were ok for one day , voltage never went past 13.second time out back to the way it was . Maintain 1000 rpm stays at 12 ish Volts , move up to 1800 ok amd it goes to almost 16 , above that it peggs the meter , just above 16. If I hit the power trim it drops to 12 and them climbs back to max of the meter .

I’ve been reading that combining a older motor with the newer batteries cause this issue which I can love with as long as it’s safe for the battery . We haven’t put a meter on the battery as yet but will try that next time out .

thanks for any assistance.

Are you confident it is a "regulator" (which includes rectifier typically) or is it JUST a rectifier? Big difference.....

Have a picture and or part number of the new part you put in?

Thanks for responding , this is the part we installed .the fact that the boat acted “ normal “ for one day and then went back to showing high voltage again was puzzling . I’ve also read that combining the latest in deep cycle marine batteries and older engines can sometimes cause high voltage readings .

That is just a rectifier (turns AC into DC), your charging system then uses the battery's inherent cell voltage in combination with a limited/lower current stator design to regulate the DC to around 16 VDC. What you report is normal for that type setup.

They (you know, the boat people) recommend as best practice, using your ole fashion flooded cell normal maintenance type battery with those un-reg'd systems....Oh and check the battery's water level regularly......

Thank you for the information , we will add “ check battery level “ to our pre run check list . Your assistance is most appreciated !
