1993 Johnson 88hp question

I've had the motor for 1.5 years with no problems - until now. While on the water, I will throttle up to get on plane and it sounds like the motor is only running on 2-3 cylinders and, after struggling, it will eventually get up and run normal, almost like the other cylinders then kick in at higher speed. This only happens sometimes - other times it powers up just fine. I also have a bad miss at slower speeds that may be related. I changed the plugs, the plug wires, and have spark on all four and am gapped to .030. I overhauled the carbs, bought a new coil and moved it around all four to see if that made a difference , which it did not. Anyone with any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 1993 Johnson 88hp question

Hi jbkk,

I have a 1994, 88hp Johnson that does the exact same thing. I just got this motor and am still trying to figure it out. I am going to try new plug wires. Already replaced all plugs.

If I can figure it out, I'll let you know, but for right now, I have no answers. You can see my posts over the last 2 days to read my story.

Good luck.

The latch on the shroud is bad about catching the top portside plug wire on these motors. Check to make sure the plug clip is still securely attached to the plug wire. Done this myself more than once and got the same symptoms.

thanks for the tip Jack , I have definitely hung the wires a couple of times with the cowling(sp?). I will go back and check the wires - funny how its often the simple things with motors and we try to complicate it. tight lines.
