I have been reading other threads wich say to make sure you remember which direction the ofset is, too late. can anyone explain this to me? When I disconected I was worried I would have trouble getting it to mate up again. I should stick to carpentry. Max

Max....let's start by asking how you released the shift rod. Did you pull the shift shaft retaining pin and push the lever to the starboard side of the engine to release the shift rod? If so, installation is just the reverse. It does help if the shift cable is disconnected.

OBJ, I did release by putting in reverse, pulling the retaining pin, and pushing starboard. I did not notice which direction the shaft was turned, can you help? also why should I disconect the cable? I just can't understand how in the world I am supposed to line up that hole in the shaft with something I can't see.

Yeah...little tight under there Max.

Disconnecting the shift cable lets you operated the shift lever by hand to help line up the pin that goes through the end of the shift rod. A lot of it is done by feel and a good strong flashlight.

Don't forget that the bend in the end of the shift rod points forward. You didn't mess with the shift rod height adjustment when the lower unit was off, did you?

Though I didn't realise it was the lenght adjustment, I didn't turn it( that I Know of). Seems that the other side of the lever is inside the engine, am I wrong. I have been trying to do this blindly, Can I actually see the top of the shift rod? Can I turn the shift rod with out pulling the lower unit again? Thank you for the help. Max

Yes...you should be able to see the top of the shift rod where it comes up through the lower pan. If it's turned a little, sometimes you can to the rod under the pan with needle nose pliers to get the bend pointing forward. Look under the pan and you can see a little bit of the shift rod. But you must get the bend pointing forward.

That's the way I find it to be easiest. Get some long needle nose pliers and rotate the rod until it's lined up...Took awhile to figure this one out the first time, but then it was a breeze...

Thanks for the info. I need to go out and try to see the top of the shift shaft, I don't see how that is going to be possible. Is there anything I need to remove to be able to find the top of the rod?

Look from the starboard side while moving the shift lever. If the lower unit is in reverse, you will be able to see it a bit better to line it up, as the end of the shift rod will be higher. You probably will not be able to see the very top of the shift rod, but pretty close.

I went to the starboard side ,pulled the air intake off, cut some wire ties so I could get some hoses out of the way and there it was. Also I realized to hook it, I had to do it in forward gear, which took some wrestling. In reverse, like the book told me, the motor was in the way. Thanks for everyones help. I love you guys. Max

Good job. That set-up kinda sucks, but it's better than the old bolt system...
