1993 Mercruiser 3.0 Idling Concern

Not sure if this is a big concern or not, but I have a '93 Bayliner with the 3.0 Merc in it and it's been idling pretty erratically. From a cold start, I have to give it a little bit more than the first notch in the throttle (throttle only button engaged) and then after a little while, I'll lock in in the first notch where it will sit pretty consistently at 1000 RPM. After I let it get warm, I'll put in into neutral and the engine idles around 700-800. However, there it will bounce around a little bit, going as high as 1000, and as low as, after a few minutes, stalling out. Going into gear is even touchier, as shifting really needs to be over-accentuated or else it proceeds to stall out, both forward and reverse. I really need to get it past that first "clunk" in order for it to stay alive. It's my first time operating anything with a carb so I know it's touchy business, but I think there's an answer to this problem. Carb cleaner? Timing adjustment? Would love to hear your guys' thoughts.

I'm guessing dirt in the carb affecting the idle circuit
