1993 Mercruiser 3.0L I/O Concerns

So I bought a boat from a friend and here's my concern-

He had it running on muffs earlier this year, and had it running on the lake and had it on/off multiple times with no issues. Last weekend he tried to start it at the landing and could not get it started. I bought it knowing all this and I had to try myself to get it started, and it DID start for me on the muffs, on/off multiple times. Why would this happen? Should I be concerned? Thanks!

Why would this happen?

Lots of things, lost spark do to bad connection, key switch, kill switch, corrosion. Might be fuel, don't know there isn't enough info and no testing was done

New to you boat means you need to check everything over and do all the maintenance to be more assured it will run
