Just wondering if anyone has any ideas how to tap into the cooling system to get a decent "tell tale" discharge on start up of these older mercurys. At startup I get very little spray out of the tell tale. I have been told that it is normal for Mercurys of this vintage. I would like to be able to tell at start up, that the engine is flowing water and not have to wait until the thermostats open.

Check your stats and see if there is a vent hole in them, if not go buy new ones that have the vents. Stats are only about 10$ each and a buck for the gasket. If they are the originals, they are over due for change anyway.
But what you are seeing is perfectly normal for that engine. Have you go a water guage guage? That is the best way to know whether your water impeller is working or not.

Replace the stats, don't mess with anything that would interrupt the cycling of cooling water. I replace my impeller every season so I know I don't have to worry about that failure. I know that it takes some time for the tell-tale to go, and I check my pressure gauge to let me know I'm pumping adequately.

Thanks for the help! I will try and find thermostats with the bypass holes. I would purchase these from Iboats but how will I know if they will have the bypass holes in them or not?
