I just bought my first boat with the engine in the title and at speed it runs fine, when I try to go slow or idle it rides rough and stalls. It is also hard to start, I really have to play with the throttle to keep it idling. The RPM's were also very inconsistant but the control cables were rusted and split so I've replaced those and hope that takes care of that. I've read through the forums and it seems that I have bad gas and ned to rebuild the carbs. I plan on doing that this weekend but I wanted to know if there was anything I might be missing or do all signed point to the low speed jets being clogged? These forums are great by the way, an excellent resource for a new boater.

get carbs cleaned and set up right, drain all old, degraded fuel, use Stabil or Seafoam all the time, a bit more when you're not going to run the motor for several weeks/months, use Yamaha Ringfree all the time, install fuel/water seperator(Walmart $27)on your transom, drain carbs once or twice a year with 10MM brass hex drain plugs, just to be sure. drain onto a clean white rag so you can see what comes out. with drain plugs out pump primer bulb to "flush out" float chambers. these are easy to do and will eliminate 95% of fuel related problems. clean, fresh fuel makes a motor happy! Good Luck!

Sounds like the makings for a fun weekend...Great tip on the pumping the primer with the drain plug out. Hopefully by Sunday I'll be idling all over the place! Thanks robert

I went ahead and took the day off and rebuilt all three carbs and cleaned them. Bad gas deposits all over the place, especially the bottom carb. Fired it up after I was done and it's like a new boat! steady idle and throttle response was great. Taking it out on the Chesapeake tomorrow for a real test.
