1994 115 Mercury Shift Shaft running water

I just bought this motor...when I hook up the water earmuffs and turn the hose on, water shoots out where the shift shaft enters the leg above the lower unit. The guy I bought it from says he put in a new impeller. Only have had one other Merc (a 40horse 1994) and no water came out but it did not have an exposed shift shaft that I remember. Is this something I should worry about, or is it normal on a hose? I have watched a couple of videos on line and they do not look like water is coming out when they are showing them on muffs. I dont want to have to pull the lower unit if I dont have to (I am almost 70 and have a very bad back and a fixed income :)....

Thank you
Greg

Can I ask if you ran the motor and had water come out of the tell tale?

Other than possibly a slight exhaust pressure, there should not be enough pressure to push water out alongside the shift shaft.

You really should drop the LU and inspect the water pump, pump to transfer tube seal, (both ends), and exhaust passage thru the LU to ensure that it is clear.

Maybe find a you a helper or fishing partner willing to lend a hand.
