Hello again Guys. I have a chance at a good buy. The outboard is a 1994 115hp Evinrude. The guy tells me it idles good and goes in gear good when running with the muffs. When he takes it out on the water, it dies when put in forward. He had the carbs rebuilt and it didn't help. I researched the forums and found guys with the same problems. Ya'll gave advice about spark plug fire, plug wires, carb setup and cylinder compression. I think in one thread someone asked for the serial #. I asked the guy for the serial number and he sent it to me. Maybe this will help in your advice to me. The picture he sent wasn't very clear. I'll send a couple of #s as I might see them, E112TSEERS, or E112TSLER3. Maybe ya'll can make it out.

I appreciate any help in advance,

What is the compression on it?? Will the spark jump a 7/16" open air gap on a spark tester ??

Re: 1994 115hp dies when put in gear

The guy who has the motor tells me he buys boats and does some work in them then sells them. I know this sounds bogus, but sounds like it might be an easy fix. He says he doesn't have either tester. I guess I'll get them, I'm sure I can use them in the future. Now, I haven't seen nor heard of a spark tester. Will the tester tell me what the spark is? I'm guessing I can get one at the auto parts store?

You can buy a spark tester at any parts house for about $8.00. They also rent compression testers.

That engine will seem to run just fine on the trailer on the garden hose with only 2 or 3 plugs firing. You need all 4 plugs firing when it's in gear in the water. You can do a spark test with a set of insulated pliers. Start the engine on the trailer (run it on the garden hose) or in the water. When running, pull one of the spark plug wires off a spark plug. The engine should slow down. (that's normal.) Reattach it and pull the next spark plug wire off #2 plug. It should slow down. Do all 4 plugs. If the engine slows down as you pull all 4 plugwires-likely the spark is good. If you pull one plugwire and nothing happens, likely the plug is not firing and it's an ignition problem. I would not be interested in the purchase of any engine without watching a compression test on the powerhead.

Since many people do not use timing lights anymore they pop up at garage sales pretty often and cheap. A great tool for testing for spark and the light will also show erratic spark (Which could be a power pack situation)

As long as you have the beginning of the model number which you do you are fine.

If it is acting up and the statement you made "he had the carbs rebuilt" That is where the rubber meets the road. Those of us who have the V-4 motors and experience have seen it all. We have seen people spray carb cleaner into a carb and call it rebuilt......well trust NO ONE! Unless you have 100% trust in the mechanic or did it yourself...... trust no one. Sadly there are allot of hacks out there.
