Should I soak or just spray carb cleaner through the carbs to rebuild? I have a slight hiccup or miss at idle. It's been doing this for years, i'm thinking rebuilding the carburetors since they have never been done would probably help this. A little background on the motor, for the last five years I've only run the boat one day a year on the lake just to keep things running. Motor probably has less than 125 hours on it. I always leave stabil in the gas but never fog the motor. I've changed the plugs and fuel filter. But used to go 39 mph now the max I can get it up to is 36mph. Runs great throughout the RPM ranges and idles good most of the time, only dying at Idle occasionally. Are carbs likely the culprit of my slowing top speed, hard seasonal starting and miss at idle? Anything else I should check? Thanks for any advice.

Spraying carb cleaner thru your carb throats will not clean the carb, nor rebuild them, It is very much like pouring a beer over your head, and thinking you are drinking it.

Yeah, I know that. I stated I was going to rebuild the carbs, my question is should I soak them or use spray carb cleaner during the process? I saw a video where a guy just replaced the gaskets, he didn't clean the carbs. I didn't think that was the right way to do it. . I haven't been into these carbs so they are new to me, but I have done plenty of car and other equipment carbs so I feel confident I can handle. Looking for some useable advice. Thanks.

Be careful of what type of carb cleaner you use if you soak them as your dealing with plastic carbs. OMC Engine Tuner does not hurt them.

Berryman Chem-Dip is supposed to be safe for plastic. Do other folks soak or just spray out the passages? Are carbs the likely suspect for a miss at idle, especially since they are 20 years old without a rebuild, or should I check someplace else before rebuilding them? Thanks

I would soak the carbs and then spray out the passages. Soaking will remove any surface stuff and varnish, and might or might not get the internal gunk.

Do you plan on using the boat more than one day per year in the future? If not, you might sell it.
