My 1994 200 seems to be running too rich. On any hole shot from a stop, it takes a few seconds for it to clean up and run ok. The odd thing about this is that one day, while trying to figure out what is wrong, I happened to put it in the water without the airbox on. What a difference that makes! It ran great. I was thinking maybe the foam was blocking off part of the low speed air jets, but that is not the case. I have replaced all 12 check valves to no avail, even though I did find a couple of bad ones. I thought that i had checked the primer for leakage recently and found none, but the only thing I have not done yet is block off the supply to the primer after I get the motor started and warmed up. Anybody encounter this before??

One of our gruus will take this one on. I have read though that you should not run your engine with the air box off for long as it changes the fuel to air mixture.

last one I did like that I lowered the floats about 1/8 inch and it cleared up, you can also try a larger size on your air jets for idle speed.
on my 120 I had to go 5 sizes larger than stock to get a clean hole shot.

Have you given the carbs a good cleaning??

Re: 1994 200hp loads up, runs rough

I know that the engine should probably not run correctly with the airbox off, but everything cleans up and it runs like it should this way. The spark plugs are new. I can probably take the carbs off blindfolded now. I have been through them a couple of times--one to clean them, another to replace needles and seats. The levels are set according to the book. I tried larger air jets, but that caused it to run odd as it transitioned out of the low speed jet. I now have the original air jets back in. It is just blubbery and rough for about the first 1/3 throttle. (much more than normal) Thanks for all replies!

Was this problem what prompted the carb work or did it start doing this since then? The reason I ask is it sounds a little similar to a link/sync adjustment issue.

I have had the motor for a little over 1 year now. It has always done it. I followed the OEM procedure for link/synch already, knowing that the roughness is not caused by that. The carb work was prompted when a couple of needles started sticking to the seats.(this actually turned into a galled piston/cylinder bore job)Anyway, I have been over and over things. It seems to be getting a little more pronounced lately. It has previously been tolerable, but I'm getting tired of it and would like to resolve the problem.

I think if I have the answer your motor would be running a lot worse,BUT just my two cents worth.

A few years back had a customer to be who said his motor was getting so bad he couldn't get on plane anymore. He was out of state fishing Bass Tournaments, and we were talking Email. He also said it ran better with the airbox off.

Finally got to work on it.Last dealer had resealed the lower unit, and propshaft bearing carrier was in upside down.It has an anode on it,and if installed upside down it blocks about 2/3's of the exhaust.

Probably not the problem, but worth a look.

DHP
