For the first time doing it, "easy" may not be exactly the right word unless you're a real mechanic.

You'll need the factory Merc manual to follow the instructions carefully so it would be best to post up your engine serial number for validation on exactly which engine package you have.

Have a look in the "Adults Only" stickies for some guides there but you should have the Alpha1-gen 2 and it will need to be removed after putting in forward gear and yes the lower unit oil needs to be drained first.

To remove the drive you put it in forward on a single engine boat. Rev is used on the counter rotating drives found on twin engine boats. Here is a couple of files from the OEM manual information. I just put it into single files to make it more user friendly.

Ayuh,... It don't matter,... Yer tryin' to shift it to Forward,... Where the throttle is, is irrelevant....

Re: 1994 4.3L V6 Alpha 1 waterpump replacement question

If you're unclear on why it should be in forward, and how far forward doesn't matter, is that you want the shift shoe in the bell housing and shift shaft on the lower part of the drive pointing directly fore and aft otherwise there is a chance of something getting bent upon removal or re-installation.

Now that you have the instructions you can read those over a couple of times to see if it all makes sense but there are some videos on utube you can watch or even watch someone else do their boat or watch while your boat is being done to give you a better comfort level.

I'll be doing the water pump on my boat when I get home. I'll make a video as I do it. Hopefully it will help a few people with Gen II drives..
