ruckus, is the motor in gear when you are doing this?

You state "turning it over". Is this by hand or with the starter?

Does it make any noises when you turn it over?

Could have a bad bearing on crankshaft, broke rod or any number of things.

Try to supply more info so that someone can give you a good answer.

oddd1 has worked on mercs all his life and I'm sure he can help you if he has a little more info on your problem.

Re: 1994?40hp jammed

i am sure it is out of gear but i must admit it is very tight to move the lever.but after it had been sitting there for ova a yr i pulled all the plugs out and moved the pistons by turning the top by hand.all looked good and free.i drained all the oil ,cleaned the carbies ran some new wiring and new fuse.i got a battery and it turned over by the key but did not start.there was no bad noises it just sounded like a outboard being turned over.i thought wow great, haha but then it just stopped.it clicks as you turn the key but it will not move.i tryed again by hand and it was jammed.but i put a rope round the top and turned it the oppasite way and it came free.i turned the key over and it turned for about 10 secs and then jammed again.but this time i can not free it.i noticed that the pistons hav stopped ina different place when you check them out.i think it mabee in the leg or a bearing but not sure as i do not know where to start on that.i am prepared to pull it apart as the only way to learn.thanks again for your help and time
