Hi, Im new to the forum so bare with me. I have just installed a rebuilt 5.7 GI (throttle body FI) and the motor fired right up and warmed to operating temperature. next step is to set the timing. I shut it off, disconnected the appropriate connector from the distributor, installed the shunt (power not connected to shunt yet) and tried to restart. For some reason? I cant get it to start? I know someone had a similar problem but I couldn't find the solution. any help? Thanks

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Does it start before, 'n after ya did the shunt thing,..??

I donno which ignition ya got, but if the shunt requires Power, I'd think that might have somethin' to do with it,...

Thanks for responding, Yes it runs very well as long as both plugs are connected to the delco-EST breakerless, electronic, high energy ignition system. The book shows 2 connections to the back- aft side of the distributor where only 1 has wires connected to it. The port side is smaller and is connected to the coil and is not an issue. the starboard side plug (in the Volvo book) has a cap on it with no wires and it is to be removed to connect the shunt for base timing. My starboard plug has 4 wires going to it which heads forward into the loom. Removing these 4 wires appears to be killing power?? Ive tried all timing possibilities within the distributors limits. Still searching for a solution.

Just to add after reading the sticky... There are no engine numbers- long story. It appears to have spark but just wont fire? Maybe the fuel injection is disabled? A local Volvo mechanic was stumped? and said I was doing everything right? Maybe there's a different shunt for this motor? Sorry that's all I got

Im back to answer my own question just in case anyone runs into this? I found out you DO NOT use a shunt connected to the distributor, but actually connect a small code reader tool (PN-94008) to the connector in fron t of the engine. Turn on the swith while the engine is running and your in timing mode. That simple! This will work for the GM- Delphi MEFI-1 thru MEFI-4 systems only.
