I found two 1994 Bayliner Classics for sale (web search).

These seem like nice sized boats. They sleep 4 and have a toilet (separate compartment) and kitchenette. One is listed at $9500 and one at $7500.

The one for $9500 includes a trailer. Not sure about the other one.

The $7500 one is closer to where I live.

Anybody have any experience with these boats?

Thanks.

First I'd start at nadaguides.com see what they say is the value of the boat with the options.
Then I would not buy either one unless you can test it in the water, or get an iron clad agreement that it is sea worthy with a money back guarantee.

I have owned one of these for 6 years, good fishing and cruising boat, takes rough water well and doesnt pound. They dont sleep 4 unless 2 are kids, the dinet will only sleep one adult. If it has a 305 you will find it under powered, works great with a 350. This is IMPORTANT check the drain in the transom, mine was drilled through raw un sealed wood, it took me 2 months to dry it out enough so I could glass it up and gel coat it

Re: 1994 Bayliner Classis 2452

I looked at one when boat shopping a few years ago and was very impressed with the layout and use of space. I passed on it because the transom was wet. Could very well have been for the same reason Dan T stated. Heed what Dan said about the 5.0 models being underpowered, too. I found several comments about that when I was researching them.

I'd check them both and if you like one of them, spring for a survey.

Good luck - hope you find a winner.

Any ideas about the cost of a survey for this size boat?

Thanks.

Pricing would be whatever the local rate is, but I'd figure $12-15 per foot. A certified surveyor will check the boat stem to stern and give you a detailed report (I've had 3 surveys done- reports run about 20 pages) of condition, accessories, what's working and what isn't. He'll employ 'tap tests' and a moisture meter to insure that stringers and transom are solid, through hull fittings aren't leaking, etc. He'll also provide an estimate of the fair market value of the boat. Remember, the surveyor works for YOU. He won't care what the seller has to say (or lie) about the boat.

I've been told that you can tell by the 'sound' of the tap, whether the wood is dry or not. I was present when the surveyor checked the Bayliner and I couldn't tell the difference. He heard it, though, and the moisture meter confirmed his suspicions.

I'd make the survey your last step, and make the final sale conditional on the results of the survey. As a first step, check NADA to at least see if the sellers were smoking rope when they set their asking prices.
