I have a 1994 bravo one 454 mag stern drive and I cant find the lower drain plug. I have looked all over the lower unit and see no plug at all. I have searched ever inch of the lower and do not see a drain plug. I found the top one as my seloc manual shows, but on the botton unit it shows it to be near the front of the unit even with the prop. I checked the front rear and even by the prop....no plug. I dont see no way to drain it? any sugestions? I did pull out the top plug and blueish green oil came out so I think it is full but I cant change it if I dont find the plug. The oil was clear and clean so I think it will be ok for the winter. Please offer any help you can give. I just bought this boat and I need to check to see if all maintance is done.

thanks :( WatersRacing@bellsouth.net

JEff

The drain plug is located in the bearing carrier behind the prop. You have to remove the prop to see it.
Justin

To encourage you to pull the prop so you can grease the shaft. Keeps the prop from freezing to the shaft.
john

Hey thanks guys,

what thru me off was that the seloc book I have kept telling me that it was in the lower unit near the front. I looked and there is not a plug there. So it must be in behind the prop. I will look in the morning.

thanks

How do I fill it with oil if it is up inside the prop?

ALWAYS fill a merc outdrive from the bottom. The top hole is a vent.
To fill the out drive you remove the top vent, screw in the little pump (which is probably the cheapest thing sold for a boat) you can buy anywhere, (ok, not anywhere, this is Iboats site so they are the only place on earth that sells them), put the pump in the flask of OUTDRIVE oil, and pump untill it comes out the top. You need to buy (from iboats) 2 quarts. Quickly replace bottom plug, replace top vent plug, reinstall prop.
The whole concept of filling from the bottom is to remove air trapped in the outdrive. Again, you MUST fill from the bottom with the little pump.

Hyper,

The process for filling as described by bomar, less the sarcasm, is the same as if the plug were on the front of the drive bullet.

I'm sure your MerCruiser dealer sells the pump kit and the proper fluid. I'm not sure if that unit has seals on the fill/drain plugs. If it does make sure you replace those too. Your MC dealer, will also have those. They are cheap insurance.

Hello!! I have a 1989 Bravo 1 7.4 and have found that there were several years including mine where the drain plug was behind the prop and on the side of the lowere carrier. Glad you figured it out...make sure that when you refill you do it from the bottom! The top and upper side plug is a dipstick and vent plug only. Good luck!
