I recently bought this boat and on the first trip I found it hard to start, when it fired it smokes a lot at low speed. When at full throttle it was turning around 4500 rpm and then it all of a sudden took off to 6000 rpm and ran great. I noticed it used about a quart of oil in less than a quarter tank of fuel. Compression is good, plugs are new and alarms work. Where should I start?

Also after running it a wile and letting it sit it wouldnt start. I tapped the oil pump and it started with a lot of smoke.

Thanks in advance

Matt

As I said new plugs, no carbon, they are wet like its rich. Havent done compression yet.
Primer bulb for fuel is soft, not like the 9.9 but I see no leaks. Oil primer bulb is rock hard.

Motor smokes a lot at itle and loads up at low speed

Wet with oil ???? wet with fuel mix ???
need compression, spark and actual fuel delivery (output from pump to carbs) to move on in my opinion.

Re: 1994 evenrude 120 V4 problems

ok, all cylinders are right at 120 PSI. All plugs are paper bag brown with oil wetness. Fuel is pumping. It all looks good. maybe when it spooled up to 6000 rpm it cleaned out some debris and all is well now. I shut it down right after that because I thought it may have leaned out. How can I check and see if the oil injection system is working properly. I hear a beep when I first turn the key, overheat horn works but don't know how to test the low oil or no oil. I'm going to order the manual tonight but any additional help is appreciated. I don't want to blow this thing up.

Also it is a E120TLETF model #

any advice?[/QUOTE

check the fuel supply and do not calm the forums with 120 lbs on all cylinders without measuring it- you did not made any compression test .

Possibly a coil kicking in and out causing the sudden surge of power.
Just guessing though as "fuel is pumping" does not give any indication of it's actual output.

I will get a pressure gauge to check fuel press. What about is it supposed to be? Could be a coil but would that account for the oil tank consumption?

What baffles me is it would only run up to 4500 rpm for most of the day with a lot of low speed smoke and slow to plain out then later it ran up to 6000 rps and seemed to run great and plained out quickly . Thats why I shut it down to make sure it didnt lean out. As said before just got this boat and I'm used to tiller 9.9's so the 120 and oil injection is new to me.

Air intrusion in the fuel/oil lines ???

Could be, I checked the hoses from the oil tank to VRO, No leaks and nice firm primer bulb. Checked the fuel from the stern bulkhead fitting to the fuel pump had a soft primer bulb but no visual leaks. The fuel line that comes off the the top of the pump to a 90 was held on by a zip tie so replaced it with a fuel injection clamp and the primer bulb firmed up. I guess I need to put her in the water and see what happens.

Run it again, if it is doing the same thing (4500) shut it down and pull the plugs, see if you have one that is alot wetter than the others..

Re: 1994 evenrude 120 V4 problems

Update. Took the boat to the Ohio river today. It fired right up, smoked for a minute and cleared up. Ran it at 1000 rpm's for a bit to warm it up then started slowly throttling up. It ran great, quick response, got right up on plain, and I trimmed it out to i nice steady 5600 RPM wide open against the current with the bimini top up. I believe it was air in the fuel line. Used a quarter tank today and the oil level went down slightly as it should. I am ordering new fuel lines soon for both motors due to them showing signs of dry rot. Where is a good place to order fuel/oil line?

Thanks for the help
