I have a 1994 Evinrude Intruder 175 on a 1990 Ranger Bass Boat. I just had it in for motor tune up (Nov 2002), compression checks great, all lube changed etc. The dealer said they re-gapped the plugs (why I am not sure) and said they were in great shape. Well I have ran the boat twice since then and now it is using like twice as much 2 cycle oil through the VRO as it should. It seems to start and run great with no overuse, but as the day goes on its seems to smoke more on start up and sometimes doesnt want to start quickly like it usually does. At throttle it seems to still run perfect and acceleration is good. I have heard there are problems with this VRO but I REALLY do not want to eliminate it and mix the oil and gas. Are we sure the VRO is the problem. I just got back from a boating trip and used about 10-12 gallons of fuel and around 1/2 gallon of oil. Also when re-reading the owners manual it says to prime to oil bulb before the fuel bulb. I have never done this but I do know the oil bulb is always hard as a rock, it can sit 8 months and never go limp. I use penz synth premium oil which I have heard great things about. Please email davidrt2t@aol.com if you have any ideas.

Check fuel lines between VRO pump and tank, could be kinked, or sucking air.

DavidRT2T.... I have the same problem with a Johnson 120 HP and I have been told that what is happening is the motor is loading with oil at idle speeds and starved of oil at high speeds, not good. I have a built in tank too and I really don't want to premix my fuel so I think I will buy the a new VRO pump.
