1994 Glastron Question

I am considering buying a 1994 Glastron SSV 175. The current owner says he has replaced the floor with marine grade plywood. Other posts on this forum suggest that if the floor has rotting problems, the transom may also have rot. So, I asked the seller and he said that the transom is all fiberglass - not wood. Is this correct? I thought there was wood inside that provides the structural integrity.

I hate to sound too ignorant (but unfortunately I am), so I ask... does a 1994 Glastron have a wood transom, and if the floor needed replacing, would the transom also likely be suspect? If it's bad, how much would it cost to fix?

Thanks for any help.

Re: 1994 Glastron Question

I do believe that boat has a wooden cored transom (I could be wrong). And you are correct to suspect that it could also potentially be rotted. Unless it was super-cheap, I'd probably walk away from any older glass boat where the owner replaced the floor. It could be hiding rotted stringers and/or transom and soaked flotation foam.

Re: 1994 Glastron Question

EZ is correct. The questions to ask are...

Did you core sample the stringers and bulkheads when you replaced the Deck/Sole of the boat?
What Fiberglass laminations did you use on the MG Plywood. (Should be Precoat the wood with Poly resin and then 1 -2 layers of CSM and a layer of cloth, or at the very least a coat or two of Epoxy resin.)
The Transom on this boat DOES have a wood core. If he did not core sample (drill into it from the inside and inspect the drill shavings for wetness) then there is no way of knowing it's true condition.

Glastron, somewhere around the year 2000 Did come out with a VEC technology and give a lifetime warranty on their boats against rot, but I'm sure it was NOT in 1994.

Buyer Beware!!!
