Today I had a new cat converter put on my 4.0 jeep cost $282.00 thought it was high but I had to get it done for inspection, last one I had put on was in year 03, I did have a magnaflow muffler put on it! The old converter he took off was rattling around, so why did it have to replaced?

The rattling around means that the part of the "brick" inside of it had burned away. I had a Cavalier do that once. No emissions, but the rattling drove me nuts!

Might be too late now but its possible to recover some of your money. I've been doing a little moonlighting as a scap man here lately. The place I go to pays $15 a piece for convertors. You might look into it.

Your cat converter is filled with a precious metal in a honey comb shape that will melt down and break apart when your fuel mixture is off. When a n O2 sensor goes bad you normaly get a rich run condition and that will eat a converter. If you just got the new one, you need to scan your vehicle quickly before you need a new one again.

If you have a 94 model you can run a self diagnostic on Chrysler bye turning the key on and off and ending in the on position 3 times in a row without starting it. watch the eng light flash and read the number of flashes to determine the codes and post.
