Does anyone know where in Ocean or Monmouth County, NJ (or nearby) I can go to have my motor serviced or rebuilt. I am still undecided if I want to take on rebuilding the lower unit myself and would like to know where I can have this done professionally at a resonable cost. I would be looking at having the motor rebuilt after summer.

I have seen some rebuilt lower units on eBay, is this the best way to go?

Also, where in the area or web can I get the best deals on parts?

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you looked here on Iboats? The prices, terms, and warranties are competitive.

Why does it need rebuilding? Have you checked compression? If so, let us know the values.

iboats, as ezeke points out, has a number of rebuild vendors for the LU, but again what's wrong with the existing one?

try Ron at Rons marine in portsmouth VA. that is what they specailize in. he has all the machineshop in house and is a BRP dealer and was an OMC dealer since the 50's.
one of the few dealers that stocks pistons, stators, and all sorts of other parts for the rebuilder.

Pete, Baywood Marine in Bricktown NJ 08723 But if your looking for a replacement lower unit here in NJ then i say go to Trixies Marina in Bayville RT 9 north you'll see signs for the Marina when you get to Bayville. They have a grave yard (1000) outboard fron the early 1900 to present. I have always been able to take my own parts off motors myself. But I have been going there for many years. But he will sell you what you need.
steve

I am not sure when its time to "officially" send her to be rebuilt. The lower unit is giving me problems in reverse, last summer I lost reverse, would just not engage. The marina adjusted the cable for me and it now slams in gear, no more room for adjustment on cable. I have been told to check the shaft adjustment, which I intend to look into. Does anyone know of a place in NJ I can bring it too?

The powerhead smokes alot, mostly in the begining. I heard it might be due to the VRO leakage, I will look into this. Early last summer I checket the compressions, ranged between 105 and 120, which I have been told is time to rebuild her. What is the number, 10 psi or 10% difference? I was thinking one more summer because it ran so good last year. I used a synthetic blend penzoil, should I be using something else?

All suggestions appreciated.

stinky2/Steve:
Does Baywood Marine in Bricktown specialize in Johnson rebuilds? I know where where they are because I tried to get a slip there last year. Who should I ask for?

I dont need a replacement, just some work on the lower unit this year and power head rebuild next. Does Trixies Marina in Bayville have rebuilt stuff? Anyone else in NJ do Johnsons?

Thanks for the info...
