Hi, I fired up my 9.9 kicker for the first time last night, it runs great, however there was no water coming out of the tell tale, or anywhere for that mater, I had it in a tub with water up to cavitation plate. Today I pulled the lower unit off, blew air up the tube in the mid section, got a good amount of air coming out tell tale. The whole impeller setup was really crusty, so I replaced that, installed lower unit. It was pretty hard to get it the last half inch, I installed the bolts and it sucked in fairly easy. Started up, no water flow, put muffs on, got good flow, put back in tub had good flow, shut off for 10 minutes, started up, no flow. Is there some kind of check valve that helps keep the impeller primed? Also when water comes out of tell tale it also comes out of hole in mid section just above fill hole for lower unit, then when the motor is shut off water drains out of that hole. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! 1994 Johnson 9.9 long shaft electric start.

Those lower holes are relief holes sounds like the thermostat closed up after sitting for 10 min how long did u run the motor after it stopped spraying water out of tell tale ? And no the impeller is never primed which is why you have to submerge the lower unit before starting the engine

Once I started it up and saw there was no water coming out i revved it up a few times to see if that would help, it didn't so I shut it off. So proly around 45 seconds or so. I also took the flush screw out of the side of the block, there was no water up there until I put the muffs on.

if you're only submerging it to "up to the cav plate " , its not deep enough in the barrel. the pump has to be submerged as it wont self prime.

Ok well after you said the impeller is not primed, I got thinking, it sits about 2" above the cavitation plate, got a garbage can under it, got it about 4" above plate....case closed, thanks for the help, I thought as long as there was water at the intake it would be good, ya learn somethin every day. Thanks!
