1994 larson 5.0 volva penta engine-not starting and cuts off when at idle

i am a new boat owner and purchased my boat last summer.
The last few times i took the boat out it was hard to start.
The last fishing trip the boat started fairly easy and then sat for about a hour in the water. Once i tried to restart i cranked the ignition about 25 times and the boat finally started. i noticed when idling or going fewer than 5 mph the boat wanted to cut off and eventually did at the boat dock. had no issues when going over 5 mph but once again had trouble starting and did but would cut off while trying to reverse on the boat ramp and put my boat on the trailer. finally had to pull my boat manually and place on the trailer.

Any suggestions. i thought about changing the fuel filter but i think i might have a bigger issue.

When was the last full tuneup, timing check, compression check, etc. ?

Would be helpful if you posted the model number or serial number of your engine and type of drive. Year doesn't help much, as unlike cars, the motor could be older or newer than the year of the boat.

Its a 5.0fl 250 hp ib/ob motor stearn drive-gas
Let me know if you still need the seriel number.

i am not sure when your above questions have been done.
i bought the boat mid summer last year and all i know it was a 1 owner boat and boat was well taken care of.
i have changed the motor oil and gear case oil and planned on doing a tune up later this year or next.

Let me know what else you may need.

Also, if there is any thing else you recommend changing or look at changing since i am not sure when things where performed i would greatly appreciate any help.

Yes, still need the serial number, or all the rest of the letters in the model number.

The full model number is 5.0FLPMDA it's a Ford engine.

I would start with the things I listed since you have no history on the boat. Carb problems could also cause your problem. There is a lot more to maintenance on an IO than just gear lube and engine oil.
