Hello everyone, I purchased a temperature switch # 87-16775A 3 recently and I received temp switch part #
87-96829A 1. Besides from the barrel/ring connection can anyone tell me the difference between these two switches? The threads are the same, I was wondering what the temerature was on either switch. To my knowledge they both work on 40hp Mercury/Mariners I'm just not sure about the year. Thanks, Kyle

What is the s/n of your engine as in your previous posts, you talk about a 1995 and a 1996 Mariner 40 and here it is a 1994.

Yeah, I don't know what year it is exactly. I was told 96, thought it was 95 and now I'm leaning toward 94. OG053196. I thought those three years where the same anyway.

Comes up as:

MARINER - ( 40 H.P. (1994 ))
Serial No: 0G053196 Model No: 7040412CD

Parts listing for model 7040412CD:

Mercury Parts, 40 HP30 JET

See 1677543, item 1 under END CAPS AND EXHAUST COVER

The 87-96829A 1 comes up as more than $100 more expensive than the 87-16775A 3 and I don't see it (87-96829A 1)listed for the 1994 engine. Did they charge you more for it or identify it as an upgraded p/n?

So it is a 94, thanks. No it wasn't identified as an upgrade. I ordered the correct part # in July and received nothing after numerous emails, finally got a hold of someone in September and they sent me this. Now I can't get a response from them. That's why I was hoping I could use this one but I'm worried about this one closing at too high a temperature. The company was boatpartscheap.com and they've been nothing but a nightmare. Btw, thanks for the reply.

You can see from the parts list which I sent you that 87-16775A 3 is available, I would call Crowley and ask them if the one you have is an upgraded unit. Until I knew for sure, I wouldn't be using it.

I'm putting the boat on the market this weekend and I'm not spending $150 on a new temp sender. I'll just take $150 off the price. I appreciate your help carholme. If anyone can tell me the temperature rating on these temp switches (at what temperature they close) I would appreciate it. Kyle

From a previous post:

Funny, I found the rating on the 96829A 1, but not on my switch. I know the 16775a 2 is a much cheaper switch, just don't know why. I really appreciate your help, I can find nothing on the web about the 16775A 3. I think the 2 superceded the 1 but mine is different. I'll keep searching. Thanks again. Kyle
