Had a bit of trouble trying to start past couple trips out, last trip ended up dead in the water and being towed back to dock. Engine cranks strong but won't fire, replaced spark plugs twice. Have checked power with volt meter. Acts like the kill switch is off, but it is ok?!

Remove the sparkplugs and ground the plugs to the engine block and have someone crank the engine does it now fire the plugs?

These engines must have full cranking speed to start, Is the starter turning it over like it should?

Trent, thanks for the suggestions, tried that already. Starter is strong. Not getting 12v on the red lead to power pack. Reading 12v out of the fuse. Trying to find where the red wire comes from before power pack. Any more ideas?
Is there a way to test the run switch?

It sounds like the same problem I had Sunday. I have a 1991 Mariner on my bass boat. I was at the head of the lake with a boat load of fish. I shut her down, and the fire was dead when I went to starter her back up. The only thing I did yesterday that you might be able to do is find the black/yellow wire and unhook it at the motor. It will be on the terminal block. This will make the kill switch and any other shut down item be disabled. If you have no fire after that, you will have to take it to someone with some test equipment to see if it is a Switch Box,
Stator. That is where mine is today. If I had to guess I would say my problem is the stator. But at a $175.00 for a stator, $165.00 for a Switch Box, and $100.00 for a Trigger. I guess I better find the problem before just replace parts. I say the wire you have to unhook is black yellow. If you do not see that wire, you can call a Mercury dealer and they can tell you.
That is about all you can do, after that you start spending money bolting parts on that might not be bad. Have the dealer test it, than you can get the part on line and change it yourself. Just pay the shop for the trouble shooting. If you decide to go that route, I can give you a Web Site that you can get your parts from.

Stalker
