Recently had starting issues. Changed spark plugs, dist. Cap and rotor.
Friend adjusted the idle and the boat started.
While hooked up to a water hose I noticed the temp inching towards 200. Friend recommended I take to the lake for a test run. Did so and while I went about a mile I noticed my temp was at about 225 and so I shut it down. Opened up hood and a lot of smoke came out. It appeared some of te smoke was coming thru a torn exhaust pipe. Any suggestions beside changing the water pump impeller?

The impeller is probably your problem, with no water, the hot exhaust burns the inside of the rubber hoses. You need new ones for each side.

New what on both sides, ext. pipes?
So the water pump impeller is where u would start?
Also, I have a dumb question. Is there a difference between the water pump and water pump impeller?

I appreciate your help.

First off...hello Don...first post...been doing a lot of reading here there and every where....I'd like commend you guys on hosting an excellent forum :)
As for the water pump and the impeller Don told you to replace....the impeller is used for drawing sea water into your cooling system..."down on the front of the crank"....the water pump for circulation..."on the front of the cam"....here's a shot from a European forum...you'll see the both pumps in the diagrams. this is my engine AQ225E

A question for Don...I have a 1986 Bayliner...Volvo Penta 225E....270 outdrive...picked it up in the water last of the season last year?.had the same problem when firing it up this week in my yard...water not circulating...temp running around 180....when I started to look...no thermostat was every in it..."160 for a boat"??...never got a chance to take the raw water pump apart...will tackle that today....this boat has never had a scrap of maintenance done to it...I'd be the first owner to make it sea worth I hope!! lol I see there are two types of sea pumps listed for my model...I see the exhaust bellows started to swell...and there was some smoking...I primed the pump with the garden hose...seemed to run with small amounts of water coming out the rear...probably have the same impeller problem....which is the right impeller kit/part number to get for this 225E? Also...looking at the exhaust bellows...I work in a bus garage....the 4" stainless exhaust clamps look like a good replacement for the bellows! lol ?..Or do you need flexibility from the manifold to the rear exhaust pipes that the rubber gives? Don?t see any flappers installed here either?thanks in advance .

Welcome to iboats bassman4u, you really need to start your own thread when you have a question, not hijack someone elses question with a completely different engine.

I left it there so you could copy and paste it into a new thread of your own.
