Removed the lower unit on a 1994 Yamaha 40HP to replace water pump and disconnected the shift rod from lower unit. The only way to reinstall lower unit was to place shifter in forward. Now locked in forward position. Is it true that there is a spring loaded pin in gear box that is preventing me from inserting the shift rod correctly. If true how do I fix.

unfortunatly if you have pulled the rod upwards far enough to disengage the cam and allow the follower pin to move fwd the only way to reset it is by removing the propshaft and bearing carrier and inserting the shift cam then reinstalling the propshaft.

Thank you Rodbolt. I thought this may be the case, however, hoped another option. This forum is great. Thank you for your help and quick response.
