We are removing the lower unit to inspect the water pump impeller on this motor. All bolts are loose, but the shift shaft linkage is still connected. I've read through a few older threads and have a decent idea of what is to happen. Having it in reverse gear helps, from what I have seen. I haven't looked closely, but does the 1995 have a removable lower cowling??? I think I read the 1996 does. If not, what is the best way to reach the linkage. What side of the motor is easiest??? I have heard of taking the bolt out, or the cotter pin, which is easier? Any other tips. Thanks for all your help.

Eric

Easiest way on the later model bellcrank type couplers is to disconnect the shift cable clevis from the shift arm. Then remove the cotter pin that contains the thrusting motion of the shift arm.By pushing in then on the shift arm,the coupler should separate and allow you to then swing the arm to one side and disengage the coupler pin from the shift rod.Removal of the intake silencers may help you see the area better.Installation is the reverse ,give or take a few choice words.
