While running my boat today I ran out of oil and the alarm sounded, I was lucky enough to be yards from my dock. I put oil in the reserve and restarted, however the alarm would not stop sounding. I notice a puff of blue smoke when I restarted, but could not get the alarm to reset. The motor is not running hot, ( second thing checked). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have 2 tanks? If so does the big tank have a float sensor in it?
Is the float stuck in tank on engine?
If it's stuck down, the alarm will go off.

The tank on the engine has to be plumb full tight. It gets that way by cracking the cap on it when the engine is idling and letting the system fill it from the tank in the boat till it overflows.

hope it helps

Thank you all, after ruling out the tank sensor by running a magnet over it, I found that the tank float was stuck. So it seems I need a new oil tank since there is no way to free the float in the tank. Bad engineering on mercs part, or is it?. Another tank to the plastic recycler because there is no way to unscrew the part. Heat welded on after it is inserted.

You got that one right! I wonder, however, if it could be severed, repaired, and re-welded.

I've got a 1991 100 and had a similar problem.
The ring magnet on the bottom of the float came off and dropped to the bottom of the post on mine.
I could see the float and get to it to raise it up with a wire after I had drained the oil but that didn't do me any good since the magnet had come off of the float.
It's a small float and I can see where the surface tension of the oil could maybe hold it down and if that's the case, you should be able to fish it free.
If it's a loose magnet you'll have to replace the tank.

Yes that is what happened, I bought a new 1 for 72 bucks and installed it.
However I needed to see tif this could be corrected, so I cut the old float assemly out. What I found was the magnet did come off the float. So I bought some solvent resistant epoxy. glued it to he float and and glued the float back in. I filled the tank with oil and time will tell if the tank leaks or the magnet comes off again.I will let the old tank sit on my shelf filled with oil until next spring to see if it works.
This entire ordeal should be an easy fix, Mercuy could solve this issue by having the float assembly unscrew from the tank. It is a waste of resources to junk a tank for a dime item dont you think????
The thing is when I bought the new tank I asked if the issue was corrected, the dealer said no. Like I said before bad engineering or just anoher way to make a buck.

I cut my old one out also and couldn't find any trace of adhesive or anything else that had held it in place. It was like the oil had eaten it off.
They should have put it inside the float or used something other than the metal clip to hold the float on the post and put the magnet on top of the float.
