I have a question for all you JonnyRude owners out there.
I just bought a 1995 Johnson 115hp Faststrike, all the compression works out and the motor looks in great shape.
The pervious owner still had the VRO oiler system connected and my question is should I disconnect the oiler as insurance? The motor runs great and all the hoses for the oiler are in good shape. I am wondering if leaving the VRO connected is a bad idea since its been working for so long would be neccesary?

Thank you

You will be mixed feedback.

Some folks will say "if it works and worked this long, then don't touch it". Why screw with something that works?

For others, they will say that VRO has 2 x alarms. If 2 x alarms, then its maker knows it has high risk of failing. And being 10 years old, it has a much higher risk of failing (compared to its < 3 years warranty years). And when the alarms go off, its often "too late". re: Engine damage is already done.

My 1996 Bayliner boat has new (new to me) 1995 Johnson 115 on it. I disconnected its VRO system because its new boat didn't have large enough rear compartments for its VRO oil tank. And, its oil tank was covered in oil. re: Showing its oil tank was leaking all over the place anyway. For my swapped motor, it was easier for me to disconnect its VRO wires / plug oil lines instead of making it work (for its different boat). In my simple world, "if engine is getting gas, I know its also getting oil (premix oil ratio / that I control its ratio)".

For my boat, I plan to run with disconnected wirings / plugged lines for 12 months. If it works as planned, I then plan to replace its large VRO pump with a simple "old school" small Fuel pump. Something like: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NIB-Johnson-...-/301396711171 Thus, creating more air ventilation space within its motor cover as well. For me, manually mixing isn't a hassle. I already pre-mix for my weed eater, chainsaw and my previous Force 120 engine. Mixing for Johnson 115 isn't a hassle (for me).

Hope this helps.
