i have only got 78-80 volts ac from the charge coil when cranking over engine. manual states 175 volts minamum at charge coil/stator. yet the resistance tests seem to come out ok for the windings in the coil. is the charge coil the problem as the timing advance and power pac seem to be ok. has anyone had trouble with charge coils on johnsons? the spark is weak and intermittant and engine will not start

Are you using a peak reading meter, meter with an adapter, or 80 x 1.414 on the ac scale with a fully charged battery.

Re: 1995 120 johnson poor spark

i am using a volt meter set at 500 vac as the sedec manual suggested for testing the output of the coil. the sedec manual says that a minamum of 175 volts is necessary one lead of the volt meter is connected to one pf the two wires from the coil and the engine is cranked to exiite the coil. the voltage is sent to the power pac wre it is rectified and in turn runs all the ignition. another problem that showed up earler is that the battery was not getting charged so all these things make me suspect the chage coil/stator thanks

You said one lead of meter connected to one of the two charge coil wires. What did you do with the other lead. If the manual reads as you say, the manual is incorrect. You should connect the meter between the two brown wires from the charge coil. If you are not using a peak reading meter or adapter, you should x the results by 1.414, which will get you close to the peak reading voltage. The voltages specs are peak volts.

Re: 1995 120 johnson poor spark

sorry. i connected one test lead to one of each of the wires from the charge coil and took the reading 75-80 volts using amultimeter set at 200vac and at 500vac. from past experiance on other motors when it seems to be a coil problem it ends up a cd power pac problem that is why i question the results
