Happy holiday to all !!!
Just pick up an 1995 15 Hp Johnson outboard (J15REOD) for holiday messing around. It just have a spark on one plug. There is a power pack # CD2 584783and a coil #583740. How do I find out which one is bad part?

the easiest way is pull spark plug wires, from plugs, now mark which one has spark. now swap the two brown wires on the coil. if the same wire has spark then i would say you have a bad coil. if the unmarked wire now has spark, i would say you have a bad power pack. keep track of what you are doing.

The bottom cylinder had spark but the top one was not. Switch the brown wire from the coil and got the top cylinder had spark and the bottom cylinder was not. So the coil is good and the CD module is bad. It looks like some wires were melted since the engine overheated. There are a couple problems: feel low compression when pulling the cord and the propeller shaft moves about 1/4" in and out. So where do I start first ?

Re: 1995 15 Hp Johnson outboard

Too much busy with Holiday :)
Finally I did compression test. Top cylinder was 60 psi and bottom cylinder was 68 psi. It is rope start motor.
Is it too low for 15 HP motor ? What is the typical reading pressure?
I think the head gasket was shot. I will remove the head to find out.
By the way, could not find the head gasket number on iboat. What is the gasket number for this motor ?
Happy New Year and Happy Boating !!!

I bet the head gasket is shot or head might have gotten warpped a bit. That compression seems low, 90-120lb seems to be normal. Pull the head off and see what everthing looks like. Check gasket for damage and put the head on a flat piece of glass with some 120grit sandpaper and move it around in a figure 8 pattern and look for areas no contact. If those two check out then you might have more serious problems, i.e- scored cyl, bad/broken rings.

I second the head gasket, my 76 15hp has 96 top and bottom.

Re: 1995 15 Hp Johnson outboard

During winter time, I had disassembled the motor and re-honed the cylinders. I just got them together now and got 120 psi, 118 psi consistently after 3 pull. Now it runs after second pull. But I found other problem that the water was not pumped up and no water came out of the pee hole. I took the lower unit out and pluged the garden water hose to a copper pipe and got the water came out at the pee hole. So block was not pluged and water came through to the pee hole. I removed the water pump housing and inspected it. Everything looked good. Put them together and ran the engine.
It still did not have water pumping the pee hole.

Put the gearcase in a bucket and run a drill on it and see if it pumps. It may look good but requires a new pump kit, been there done that.

I was thinking about to put it in the bucket and spin by hand. But I was still thinking how to make it runs fast enough. Thanks for your idea of using the drill !!! I will do it soon.

Need Help with 1995 15 Hp Johnson outboard

There is a screw for idle adjustment on the cab. of 1995 15 Hp Johnson which I try to adjust it and I forgot how many turns it should be.
Does anyone know how many turns out from light tighten position ? I remember at least 4 turns but I am not sure.
