I have a 1995 20hp short shaft tiller motor that I'm looking to possably convert to a long shaft. I know the same year 25 parts will work but has anyone already done the search and can tell me what other years and motors I can use for part? Figured I would ask before I spend a bunch of time digging.

Look for -----Bay manufacturing.-------They offer kits for converting short to long shaft.

Has to be cheaper than a whole lower unit and easier if they still make one for my motor.

???-----The lower unit casting is the same between a long and short shaft.-----You would change the driveshaft and shift rod.-----The exhaust housing is 5" longer on a long shaft motor !

Well the Mercury parts catalog has different part numbers for the gear housing assembly (short and long) so I assumed it was different. If I could just figure out what mercury parts are needed maybe I can just source them out.
  1. Driveshaft Assembly
  2. Driveshaft
  3. Shift Shaft
  4. Water Tube

You would need a 5" longer exhaust housing.---Longer driveshaft.----Longer shift rod.---Longer water tube.---Plus lots of time for the work.--Cheaper to buy a used long shaft parts motor I say.----This long shaft / short shaft thing is often misunderstood.

I totally agree with you on finding a good lower unit but I don't see many advertised units with a blown or frozen powerhead in my area.

I'm in central New Jersey near Raritan Bay so if things aren't too busey tomorrow I'm going to check a few marinas in the area. Maybe I'll luck out and find a good 40hp tiller instead.
