Had boat for 3 months (1995 Reinell with 4.3 GL 190 hp Volvo Penta). Filled up at floating gas staition on lake, boat ran well. Next day, wouldn't start. Marina charged $1,000 to drain tank, rebuild carb and change impeller. Ran great next weekend. Now won't start. Have 1/2 tank gas, good spark, fuel filter has gas, carb is empty. After pumping the throttle, no gas is getting in carb. When gas is poured into the carb, she starts then dies after gas is burned up. Do you think it is a fuel pump, clogged line or ??. Previous boat was an outboard, don't know much about i/o. Any help or advise will be appreciated.

Does that model have the electric fuel pump on the upper stb. front of the motor? If so, there is a relay and a circuit breaker than powers it. While cranking the motor it gets power from the starter solenoid, and while running, it is powered by the alternator. These have to be checked before condemning the pump.

I don't mean to dump too many options on you, I had a 4.3 before my first outboard . After changing the fuel pump, the carburateur acted up . I had to pour gas into it, to start it up. Could be the Carb. I agree with seahorse and snoortan , there are many things to check . One thing at a time. Good luck.

some electric fuel pump systems are like what seahorse said, but some use an oil pressure switch instead of the alternator to determine if the engine is running. First thing to do is put a test light or multimeter on the fuel pump leads while cranking the engine. Go from there.

My money is the anti-siphon valve. Here's a trick I learned right here on this very board. Disconnect the fuel line right where it enters the fuel pump and connect an aux. gas tank. Replace the anti-siphon valve if it starts. Otherwise look at replacing the fuel pump.

Thank you for all the advice. It has been very helpful. After checking everything from the carb to the tank, I disconnected the fuel line to the fuel pump, hooked into a jerry can and the engine started just fine, ran it for about 10 minutes with no problem. "Juan Cool Dewd" said it might be an "anti-siphon" valve. What is this and where is it? Is it something I can get to easily. Thanks again.
