I may need some help changing the water pump and was wondering if this motor may present any special problems? I don't have a manual for this motor, however I do have a manual covering 75hp-200hp Mercury's, which may be helpful. I welcome any suggestion. Thanks

No mysteries here, same principle as the bigger motors. The shift shaft is splined, therefore nothing to uncouple.

Just make sure to leave both the remote control box and the shift shaft in whatever gear you had it in when pulling the lower unit off.

Use care not to disturb either while you're working on the lower unit.

I'd expect there may be a hidden bolt under the trim tab, you'll probably want to pull it off just to make sure.

Check at the Merc website for good parts breakdowns/illustrations, just plug in your serial # and away you go:

Thanks Chief, I'm waiting on the parts. Maybe I want have any trouble. By the way, would you or anybody know the reasoning Mercury designed a motor with 4 cylinders to produce only 40 hp.

The number of cylinders an engine has has no bearing on its horsepower. Its the bore and stroke (displacement) of those cylinders that determines the "capability" of the engine. You can have a very small displacement four cylinder engine as well as a very large displacement four cylinder just like in cars. There are large and small 4 cylinder, V6 and V8 engines. And engines of the same displacement are available in two or more horsepower ratings.
