So the motor has ran great most of the year. A couple days ago as I took of to throttle up, it ran for a second & shut down the motor. As I tried to restart the motor, the bendix will engage, but not turn the flywheel. Also, can’t move flywheel by hand afterwards. I brought it home & took plugs out to make it easier to spin flywheel. Found the starter had a loose lug on the hot. After fixing the issue, motor started fine all day out of water with muffs. Took back to lake & went to throttle up again & got the same results. Motor died & flywheel won’t spin by hand. I’m mechanically inclined, but not a lot of experience with boat motors. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

In my opinion these gearcases are not robust.-----So drain the gear oil and report what you find there.

I will try to do that tomorrow afternoon. We’re experiencing a lot of rain at this time. I also have a mechanic that’s pretty cheap that’s done work for 40 years on these motors that I hope to take it to possibly. I just wanted to fix myself if possible. Thanks for the info

@racerone here was my issue. Bearing is shot & oil had fragments all in it. What’s the chances of a rebuild?

You will be shocked at price of the parts.----Gears , bearings perhaps driveshaft.----Time to shop for a lower unit or parts motor.-----Did I say that these units are not robust ??

I’ve actually found a site that has the parts. I really have to see exactly what I need. My old buddy (40 year mechanic)thinks he can help me. I’m thinking maybe $150 or so from what I can tell

What site is that ?----$150 to fix that would be a bargain.---Buy a lottery ticket if $150 fixes that mess.

Boats.net is the site. I’m just trying to figure out what all I need. I know one bearing in the pictures is toast. Not sure what’s behind it yet.

When that bearing goes it usually wipes the teeth off the pinion and forward gear.---Perhaps damages reverse.------Perhaps a broken clutch dog.------Did you price those ?

As of now, I’m still piecing back together. I’ve ran into a lot of issues with the drive shaft having the race literally welded to it. I had it to a machinist multiple times to get it back to the correct size. Hopefully today is my day to finish it all. Fingers crossed.

Which bearing ?----What did the gears look like ??------You are installing new bearings ?----Checking pinion height with the replacement thrust bearing.----Any pictures of the bottom of the driveshaft bearing housing ?

dude... just buy a parts motor for $200, or a used gearcase. not worth 8 hours of labor and atleast that in parts.
