To perform a compression test you need a compression gauge. AutoZone will loan you one for a security deposit which they will return once you bring the tool back. Pull the safety lanyard off the switch so the the motor will not fire when you crank it over by turning the ignition key like you're trying to start it. Pull all the plugs out, screw the gauge into the spark plug hole and crank the motor like you're trying to start it. Look at the gauge and check the reading. Here's a link to show how it's done. This person is using a jumper cable to engage the starter.

I tested the spark plugs and compression and they are both good. I replaced the zip ties that the gas lines had on them with metal hose clamps through out the motor. ( some of the zip ties were so loose, you could move them with your hand). Then I adjusted the jets in the carbs. The thing is idoling like a champ now. Thanks for your help.

You adjusted the jets in the carbs???
How did you do that?No adjusting the jets.
Top of the Force Forum is a thread called a linc and sinc.
Do that and then adjust the air screw.
I'm just making sure that you don't have the air screw too far out.
It can cause big damage.
Air screw in to the bottom(gently)then out 1 1/16 turn.
Then in the water, running,in gear idle about 750-800.
Turn the air screw in till it bucks, kicks, stutters or stalls then out 1/2 turn.J
