Hi Team! I hope everyone is having an excellent start to their 4th of July weekend festivities!

I have a 1995 Crownline 266 BR with 888 hours -- super clean boat, never had any issues prior.

Yesterday I was running at around 35 miles per hour on approach to a lake-side bar when I throttled down and the engine shut off. I put her in neutral, checked the engine temp (was right at 175), cranked her and nothing. Had to get towed in (to the bar, which was nice). Had it sitting there for awhile and checked the easy-to-see connections... nothing was wrong.

I switched the battery power from "ALL" to "1" and then back to "ALL" and cranked it... started right up.

I saw that I was getting good gas feed to the motor...

Decided to leave the bar given that it was idling strong - made it about 85% of the way home and hit a small wake - the motor died again. Same issue... wouldn't start - I messed with the battery power, etc. Got towed back to my dock. Let it sit overnight - went out this morning and it started right up.

At my wits end. Any thoughts / help would be greatly appreciated!

Howdy

What motor is in the boat, and being a 95 I'll guess it has a carb?

Hey there! It has a Mercury 454 7.4L with the Bravo 3 outdrive. Since I last posted, I went out and unhooked the Tachometer wire (per a recommendation from the mechanic at the Marina). He said there can sometimes be a short in the instrument panel that interrupts the coil in the wire.

I also had some pretty heavy corrosion on one of the batteries that I cleaned off - and I also purchased a new battery -- just in case. Yesterday was seemingly a great day on the boat. I started right up and we went from the house, to the bar, to a cove, to a bar -- then helped a stranded boater.

On the way back to a different cove, I trimmed down a little but while running at 30mph - and once I got to the cove, when I started to throttle down, I had some engine sputtering and then it cut out.

Temperature is right below 175 degrees the entire time. No other issues that I can report.

I'm thinking it has to be electrical, but I can't figure it out.

It does sound like electrical. Your right during the transition year when Merc went from TB-4 to TB-5 ignition. The problem with these issues is there very hard to find. Need it to fail and stay that way to figure it out. It does happen a lot and many times its just a connection, so I would start there.

10 pin engine connector
Inside the distributor is an pickup module, check for corrosion
Ignition key
man overboard switch
Corrosion on connectors
