I am finally going to install a water separator on my 1995 175hp Evinrude. My question is what fuel flow rate do I need for my motor? I see most separators come in 30, 60 and 90 gph. Is it worth getting one with a clear bowl on the bottom?

Also what is a good brand to get. I read where the Moeller leaks and sucks air around the clear bowl. Racor is what most recommend but is a little higher, just don't know which one to get?

Thanks,
Robert

Your outboard will not need anything close to 30 gph, the 30 will work. Only use for clear bowls is to see water or other junk which may show up. The one below will work fine, just change the filter every couple years.

Thanks for the reply, this kit shows to have 1/4" plugs. My manual says that my motor needs 3/8" id hose. Will this 1/4" NPT restrict fuel flow?

If it was myself I'd go with the Racor with the glass bowl. I've installed a lot of them and they work real good. You can get different fittings for the fuel line ins and outs. With the glass bowl you can monitor what's in the fuel system.

There are others which have larger fittings, just look and you will find them. Guess the 3/8 may be needed because the fuel pump doesn't have much suction, so larger diameter lines will make it easier for the pump. You can find just about any diameter fitting your looking for and stick with what the manufacture indicates.

Use the 3/8" ID fuel fittings for that V6. (They are a good idea for any motor above 90HP, BTW) That motor will use no more than 17Gal/hour, so a 20GPH separator is adequate. I like the ones that look like spin on oil filters. They are cheap, easy to find and only have one seal to leak, not like the ones with a clear bottom.

When changing the separator, dump it's contents into a clear container and check for water. You can monitor the water in your fuel tank that way.

Thanks for all the help greatly appreciated. Does anyone know if the fittings that screw into the 1/4" NPT head have a 3/8" ID?

Also every filter I find is only 21 microns, do I need to find a 10 micron?

Sorry for my previous post, needed to engage my brain a bit more. A 1/4 NPT fitting outside diameter of the Male Pipe Thread is 0.0540, so about a 1/2 OD. The ID of the 1/4 NPT is around 3/8 inch which also fits 3/8 fuel line. So the previous kit will work just fine and does contain 3/8 hose barb to 1/4 NPT fittings.

Edit: I was wrong about the 21 micro filter being a good filter media

every manufacturer recommends 10 micron filters but Yamaha which specifes 5 micron filters.

Get out of the "bargin brand" filters and you'll find quite a selection of 5 and 10 micron filters.

Fuel filters are vital to your engines performance and longevity and nothing hold more truth in filters than you get what you pay for.

I run nothing but Racor filters with the clear bowl. Never had a leak. Never heard of one leaking when properly installed.

Suggestion....to say a couple of bucks, buy a inexpensive filter assembly. Use the head and replace the filter with a Racor, clear bottom assembly.
