Hello again,

I have a question. My next door neighbor has a pontoon boat with this motor on it 1995 48 horsepower SPL Evinrude . He was getting it ready for the season. It cranked up good and sounded good on Friday. The problem is he has a little oil comming out between the prop and the housing and leaking on the cement Saturday morning. Does he need to remove the lower unit to replace the prop shaft seal or can you just remove the prop and remove the seal without removing the lower unit. Or is there a different seal causing this leaking. It was a little oil maybe a couple of half dollar coin size puddles. Is that bad or Are we being paranoid about this? We were suppose to go to the lake on Sunday but he says that we can't because water will get into it and lock up the lower leg unit.

What color was the oil? If it is dark brown or black, then it is just residual oil from running it. A 2 cycle only burns about 70% of the fuel/air combo and the rest just passes through!

if it's brown or black that means it's normal and the lower leg unit oil isn't leaking.

That is typical of a motor that was "fogged" when put in storage from the last season. Lots of left over fogging oil. Will smoke for a while when you get out on the water.
